We celebrated the start of 2019 by releasing the wonderful flipper-dancing grey seal Loki. It had been just over two months since we picked him up from Scottish SPCA inspector Carol Blain at the Kirkwall NorthLink Ferries terminal to bring him north while Ross Flett from Orkney Seal Rescue recovered from an operation. He was a delight to care for from the start, learning quickly to eat fish on his own so we could take him outside to the big pool to be fattened up. By New Year he was so heavy it was a struggle for our ever-helpful volunteers and good friends Richard Riley and Alison Riley to tip him into his box for release. And it didn’t take him long to make his way out to sea – after turning back once to shore he headed off and was spotted in the distance through a telescope catching a fish. There’ll be no stopping this boy. We reckoned he would be heading back to Orkney in no time.
