How you can help
Some people have been kind enough to organise fundraising events to support the sanctuary, anything from a car boot sale to a sponsored run. JustGiving makes it easy to fundraise, leaving you free to prepare for your event.
If you would be interested in organising such an event, please do get in touch and we will do all we can to help.
Here are just a few ideas. We would love to hear about any event you are organising and encourage people to take photos, so that we can thank you on our Facebook page and in our news.
- Open gardens Many areas/cities have annual open gardens events. If you have a garden and would enjoy hosting such an event it is a nice way to raise funds without having to do a lot of extra preparation and/ or expense.
- Sponsored bike rides A most enjoyable way to raise funds and keep fit at the same time.
- Sponsored walks It could be summiting a local landmark or a gentle beach stroll.
- Plant sales A good idea for anyone who is part of an allotment group. If our environmental ethos is one that is close to you heart and you care about marine mammals this may be a way in which you can help support our work
We take volunteers from all over the world between May and September to help with the upkeep of the sanctuary. Most of our volunteers come through word of mouth and the WWOOF network – World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms.
Much of the work involves helping to maintain the property, which is based in a historic building on the seafront with extensive gardens where we grow our own vegetables.
Occasionally groups of volunteers, young and old, come to help out at the sanctuary when there is a job to be done that needs a lot of people.
For Health and Safety reasons, we are not able to let volunteers work directly with the animals as they are dangerous, but there can be jobs cleaning and tidying up in the animal enclosures.
If you are interested in volunteering, please get in touch by phoning 01806 503348 or email us at email@example.com and we will arrange to have a chat with you about availability and what is involved.
We welcome visitors to the sanctuary throughout the year, especially during the summer months when these beautiful islands are looking their best.
We also have a small shop where, in line with our low-environmental impact ethos, we recycle second hand goods to help raise money for the sanctuary, which is open during the summer on weekend afternoons.
If you are a local retailer, you might like to place one of our attractive collection tins next to you till. All tins have our charity registration details and contact numbers on them.
Collection tins are a good way of raising awareness about our work.
If you would like to display a Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary Collection tin at your premises please contact us by phone 01806 503348 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
